Алан Беннетт - одинокий писатель средних лет, которому повезло приобрести квартиру в Кемдене, что располагается на севере Лондона. Не сдерживая присущую англичанам любознательность соседи начинают знакомиться с новым жильцом, ненавязчиво, но вежливо предлагая дружбу. Конечно были и те, кто с подозрительностью отнесся к владельцу жилья. Они не стеснялись задавать некорректные вопросы, с целью вдоволь удовлетворить собственное любопытство. Но общество неоднородно. Прямо под окнами Алана поселяется бездомная старушка на стареньком фургоне. Взращенная с пеленок толерантность англичан не дает им права прогнать Мэри Шепард. Но сама благодушная женщина обещает сменить место дислокации через месяц-другой. Поначалу соседи брезгливо относятся к Мэри. Однако, вскоре она становится звездой района и остается жить там на пятнадцать лет.
